Relationship Therapy

It is general good advice to say it’s important to ‘make time to talk’, but we can easily underestimate the positive effect having that time can have on our relationships, most of all with our partner.

When people start coming to therapy, I have noticed that very often in just the first few sessions, they will tell me that things in their relationship have been getting better, they are arguing less, talking more and enjoying each other again. The results show that just making the time to talk about your relationship can create a space to process our upsets and concerns before talking them through with your partner.

Raw emotion and defensive reactions can escalate arguments into seemingly never-ending spirals of unresolvable conflict. Having space to talk means being able to understand what’s happening, help address anxieties and issues as well as practicing ways nourish your relationship. Taking ownership of our side of the partnership can initiate focus on what we have power over and can clarify ways to calm things down as well as create peace and sense of security with each other.

Prevention is better than cure: If you are talking about things in your relationship regularly, they don’t have a chance to build up and create resentments and disconnection between you. This is the easiest way to deal with issues as they arise, before they become big problems further down the line.
